 Eosinophilic Esophagitis

It starts with difficulty swallowing, even spit seems to ball up in my throat and my breath starts to get that stinky spit smell (not so fresh spit smell). The lump of thick-sticky-spit feels similar to what it feels like when you swallow peanut butter and it gets stuck in your throat, but even when you drink water (like you would with peanut butter) it still feels stuck.

After a couple of hours of that, my throat begins to burn and feels scratchy and sore. I can literally feel my esophagus all the way down to my stomach.

Burps get stuck also, so often, I have to push on the side of my throat where I feel the pressure, to make the air bubble come up. Manual burbing, I call it.

When it’s really bad, my stomach feels like it’s in a knot and food seems to sit in there for a very long time, if I press on my stomach it feels like a hard ball. Sometimes I rub my hand in circles over it which seems to get food moving again. The food sitting in there to long makes the stuck burps much worse.

If the symptoms are severe, I have asthma type issues as well. My lungs feel inflamed and swollen and full, not of air, but pressure.

As the inflammation subsides, the scratchy irritated feeling remains for some time and then the nausea and acid reflux kicks in. Acid reflux is not the cause of my EOE, but it is a side effect.

Eating food sometimes makes it better for 15–20 minutes, I think because swallowing stretches the esophagus a bit and opens it. Sometimes the inflammation is so bad though that food impacts instead. There have been times when I have tried to drink water to wash it down and the water comes back up and I cough and choke. Many times I can feel the water get stuck midway between my mouth and stomach and then slowly drain around the blockage.

My spit gets really thick when I’m having symptoms and I’m constantly clearing my throat and lungs and spitting.

Rainy weather makes my symptoms 10x worse and where I used to love getting rain (I live in the dry desert) I now dread it.

I can be symptom free for days and then eat something and immediately within 15 seconds of putting food in my mouth, barely be able to swallow. While it hasn’t ever blocked my airway I ‘m always afraid it will and I get a little panicky rush of adrenaline.

When I’m having a bad flare I’m very irritable as it’s extremely uncomfortable sensation of being choked all the time.

Other symptoms I’ve had are: rashes, joint pain and muscle twitches. These are allergic type responses to the same food that trigger EOE.

I’m on a gluten free, dairy free and sugar free diet (including fruit/fructose) and I rarely get flares anymore. On the rare occasion (once every 3 months or so) when I do get a flare, it rarely lasts more than an hour or two. Eliminating these particular foods seems to have helped others I know who also have this disease.

What are the treatment options for Eosinophilic Esophagitis?

Esophagus is means an inflammation of food pipe or gullet and eosinophilic esophagitus means the migration of special white blood cells to the food pipe as the result of some allergic response to food. The treatment will be accordingly.
your doctor will ask you to have some allergy test that may lead to point out some food you are allergic to or they can take other approach avoidance of certain foods for six weeks and then reintroduce into your diet one by one to see which triggers it and lastly, they can ask you to avoid food like milk, eggs, nuts and soya to see how your body reacts to it .
Medical management includes use of fluticasone or steroid spray you have to use this for this.
if both treatments do not work then you may end up having endoscopy or gastroscope to see if you are suffering from any other problem.
